SGA Reduces Internal Budget by 48% for 2019-2020 Academic Year

BOSTON, April 2, 2019 — Following student feedback regarding its budgeting, Northeastern’s Student Government Association voted unanimously during its Senate meeting on April 1, 2019, to reduce its internal budget for the 2019-2020 academic year by 48%, from $56,991.61 to $29,591.61. This reduction will be made possible by changing the source of the money dedicated to stipends, from the Student Activities Fee budget to SGA’s own cash account (fundraised externally).

“It’s my recommendation to preserve accessibility to leadership positions by allocating stipends in the Fall from the Association’s cash account, to avoid taking them out of the Student Activities Fee, which comes directly from students’ pockets,” President Dylan Balcom stated, when explaining the recommendations he presented to Senate. “We’re happy that such a large amount of money is going back to the budget pool for student organizations to utilize.”

The Association also plans to cut giveaway costs, as per the changes made to the SAF manual, which no longer allow for those items to come out of the aforementioned budget pool. Similarly to other student organizations on campus, these budget changes will be submitted to the SAF for review, before being fully approved.
